Creating a Fun Carved Pumpkin: A Halloween Top 10 for Decorating

Creating a Fun Carved Pumpkin

Something fun to do during the Halloween season is to create a Carved Pumpkin! People have been carving pumpkins in North America for 200 years – or until a flood of Irish Immigrants came to the USA and brought the tradition of carving the US shores. In Ireland they had been carving turnips for many centuries, but when Irish Immigrants came to the USA they discovered they much preferred the pumpkin – which is native to North America.

Pumpkins today are the most symbolic item of the Halloween season. They are based on ancient superstations that carving and lighting the pumpkin would scare away bad spirits. The lite pumpkin is also based of the Irish Legend that the Jack O’ Lantern, which was a lantern used by a bad guy named Jack – who was forced to wander the earth with only the lite vegetable to light his way.

Carved and lite pumpkins are exciting decorations for those who celebrate Halloween. The pumpkin is also a strong symbol of fall with the farmers bringing in their harvests and getting ready for winter. The food stuffs that the pumpkin generates for Autumn is also spectacular: Pumpkin Lattes, Pumpkin Soup, Pumpkin Pie, Pumpkin Pudding, Pumpkin Bread, Pumpkin Cookies – the list goes on and on.

Setting Up the Carved Pumpkin

The first step in carving a pumpkin is to get the pumpkin innards from outside the body. To get inside the pumpkin you need to carve a hole at the top of the pumpkin. Try to cut a nice round circle on the top of the head (for cutting tools I’d recommend getting dedicated pumpkin knives at the store, there are some neat kits out there – they include scoopers and pumpkin stencils).

Once the top is off the pumpkin head, scoop all the innards from the inside (pumpkin seeds and shavings). Try to get as much out as you can.

Then proceed to do a basic design with a marker – to make sure that you’re not just randomly cutting. For this demonstration I just did a basic face design, but I encourage people to be more elaborate and decorate.

From there start to cut the trace with the knife by carefully following the drawing.

Proceed to push out the cut out pieces and to remove any residual shavings with a knife or a spoon.

With the finished pumpkins you can save the seeds for a snack and back them for a nice light snack. After that, enjoy the finished product and show it off to friends and family – and be sure to light it up on Halloween night!
